Campbellton Landing

Campbellton Landing is proud of the important role in history played by the Cape Fear River, the Campbellton settlement and surrounding sites. We are pleased to bring new prominence to this Fayetteville riverside location as a center for dining, shopping, river sports and entertainment.

The original village of Campbellton – located on the west side of the Cape Fear River (across the River from today’s Campbellton Landing) – was established by the Colonial General Assembly in 1762.  Campbellton was an important site because of its position at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear River, which served as a highway between the port of Wilmington and the trade communities located around Campbellton.

In 1783, “Upper and Lower Campbellton” (as the combined towns of Campbellton and Cross Creek had become known) were renamed Fayetteville, in honor of the Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette. People living by the river, however, would continue to refer to the location as Campbellton.
